Thai Yoga Massage

As you know, I do Shiatsu Massage Therapy. I thought it would be fun to take another class in Shiatsu, but at the time there was no Shiatsu class to be taken. I took a Thai Yoga Massage class instead — I thought it would be fun to see the differences and similarities between the two therapies. There is a big difference between the two, but also similar aspects to them.

Thai Yoga Massage vs Shiatsu Massage Therapy

Similarities include:

  1. Both therapies are done fully clothed.
  2. No oil is used in either
  3. Both are done on the floor on top of a massage mat.
  4. Stretches are involved, but Thai has more, it even has a nick name.
  5. Both use hands, palms, feet and thumbs on the client to give pressure.
  6. They both involve energy pathways.

That where the similarities end, Differences include:

Thai Yoga Massage

  1. There are 72,000 points running along Sen lines, each with its own function.
  2. Doesn’t involve rolling and rocking, but more stretching.
  3. Is rooted in yoga, Ayurvedica tradition, and Buddhist practice.

Shiatsu Massage

  1. The points are called Meridian Points, located on 12 channels of energy each with its own function.
  2. Has a lot of rolling and rocking of the joints and body.
  3. Is rooted in Japan from a composite of Chinese massage called Anma and Western techniques of physical manipulation. It draws from Traditional Oriental Medicine.

Both practices believe that blockages in these points — the meridians or sen — result in an imbalance of energy flow causing disharmony in body leading to stiffness or pain. Working on these points can restore balance and well-being, while decreasing stress and leaving you feeling energetic.

How long does it take for a Thai Yoga Massage?
Traditionally it takes two hours, because of the complex point of view that any problem is not simply illness, but rather a disorder of the whole being. So, the whole body can be addressed, but time is needed. On the other hand, not everyone can afford this length or have the time to give. Progress can still be made in hour or hour and half sessions as well.

The Benefits for Shiatsu and Thai Yoga are the same as with any type of massage:

  • Decrease chronic muscular tension and pain
  • Improve circulation
  • Increase joint flexibility
  • Reduce mental / physical fatigue and stress
  • Improve posture while reducing blood pressure
  • Reduce anxiety
  • Enhance any workout practice
  • Increase resistance to injuries
  • Improve range of motion
  • Raise alertness
  • Have more energy
  • Find peace
  • Get rid of the build of lactic acid and other toxins
  • Improve circulation
  • Tone internal organs
  • Promote better sleep
  • Heal injured muscular tissue faster
  • Improve concentration
  • Create an overall sense of well-being

After looking at these therapies more closely and their movements, I find that they have lot more in common than I realized. It’s the history and the theories of healing that makes the difference.
